All around the world today, many educational systems have organized a set of regulations and punishments in order to prevent young students from cheating, lying and plagiarizing which is known as the Honor Code. However in Edinburg Cisd, the Robert Vela high school campus maintains a student hand book system that lacks the enforcement its needs to prevent these problematic situation. Ever since the school opened, the possibility of these students cheating and plagiarizing probably increase due to internet access and staff encouragement. Also the punishment placed on these situations is either a zero on the assignment; maximum a level two if continued. Therefore, the Robert Vela high school needs make some revision on harsher punishments, not
Not so long ago, the honor code system was brought up to the U.S. Senate whether if it’s best to have it input schools to lessen cheating behaviors from students. It was not welcomed at first for those that were against the honor codes and as well of the people in the Senate. Even though after all the revisions and such, some voted to agree to have the codes set in place that would be good enough to have around in school; albeit honor codes don’t always work around schools, and cheating or some type of academic dishonesty will always happen— it’s inevitable. It seems by having these honor codes set in place, it would oppose the cheating and consequences against students. As the ones who have voted for the honor code wanted that safe, confidential, and knowing that their hard work and knowledge wasn’t used against them.
Most teachers have great relationships with their students and want them to succeed. Some students struggle and end up cheating. Having an Honor Code would destroy these resected student-teacher relationships non existent due to the fact that students would have to tell on other students. The balance that had been established would be destroyed and could never be recovered. Having an Honor Code will fracture the trust that students have with teachers.
Honor codes, with careful consideration of rules and boundaries can govern schools, advancing students and making society a better place. Every year, thousands of students across the globe are punished for breaking an honor code. A study done by a public university showed that 42% of individuals knew the sanctions that can occur (Source E).Even students at the University of Virginia, a university known for honor, have been caught cheating, with hundreds more under investigation with expulsion as the punishment. (Source D) Yet students still choose to break these sanctioned rules, on the premise of not being caught, or simply not having a say in the creation of these rules. Rules forced upon a society lead to rebellion, a simple fact of history, and the basis of the creation of our country.
There is an ongoing debate about whether or not the honor code, a code that obliges students to report academic dishonesty of their fellow peers, is strict enough, with many students claiming they feel that their privacy is being violated, and others worrying that requiring reporting cheating to superiors will cause friction amongst the student body. Others claim that with the abundance of recent statistics of high level cheating and plagiarism, a stricter honor code is a necessity. While it is important to respect the student’s privacy, and maintain an ideal learning environment, the fact remains that the honor code, as it is currently, is underperforming, and that stricter measures need to be taken, for the sake of a fairer learning environment. The main contention of the test takers seems to be that being closely watched and supervised make them feel uncomfortable and invalidated.
Windham High School should establish an honor code. There is an abundance of cheating, stealing, and plagiarizing that happens here and not many get punished for it. Although, if WHS did establish and honor code I don’t believe it would work. Too many of the students here rely on cheating. More students than not cheat so, I don’t believe many students would report others cheating.
In schools cheating is something that is looked down upon and seen as a huge issue to teachers and administration. There are multiple methods that have been used to stop this dishonest actions however, the honor code is the most well known. Many schools have unique versions of the honor code but, they all have the same goal. Cheating is a serious topic and should not be tolerated however some honor codes don’t do the best job in controlling the students. My school does not have a harsh and over the top honor code which is a good thing and should be maintained.
It is something that can hardly impact others, but can greatly impact the person committing the act. Although many people believe that students in college or high school are old enough to be treated like adults and should know better, they restrict them with the honor code which demeans them and expects the worse from them. If they should be treated like adults, is it not fair to trust them to not cheat or plagiarize like one would trust any other adult not taking an exam or completing a paper? By involving the students, promising privacy, and coming to a consensus with ways to effectively inflict discipline, the honor code will not be a set of rules that the students will have to follow, but will, instead, instill a sense of unity between the student body and staff and achieve
Integrity is being honest and doing the right thing even when no one is looking. Don Galer’s quote, “Integrity is what we do, what we say, and what we say we do” shows that integrity is affected by strong moral principles and what we do with those. The role of National Honor Society is to celebrate the students who have kept up their integrity throughout their high school career and to keep them on that same path. Integrity is an important aspect in education today because there are so many opportunities to cheat on a multitude of assignments but the students who stay away from cheating will be better off in the long run. An honor code or honor system is a set of rules or principles governing a community based on a set of rules or ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. An honor code implements a set code that specifies certain rules in their school. An honor code doesn’t benefit students trust in their school system. An honor code can end up making students engage in mistrust, create misuse of the code, and can cause students to be at odds with each other. When students are forced to commit to an honor code, every student isn’t going to be 100% honest.
An honor code can be so effective that “many schools with academic honor codes allow students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control cheating” (Source F). Despite this system, there is research that “indicates that the significantly lower levels cheating” (Source F) at schools with honor codes. This is possible because there is a peer culture that denounces cheating, making kids embarrassed to commit academic dishonesty. Such a peer culture was formed by educating the students about the value of academic dishonesty.
The Oral Roberts Honor Code can be summarized as a set of rules that we as Christians should follow strictly. It tells us what is right and what is wrong in a Christian standpoint. The purpose of the honor code is for us students to sign off on a set of rules, and as a Christian or as a human being when you sign a document you must stay true to your word and follow what is on that document. It also sets a standard that ORU students need to act out, therefore setting us apart, putting ourselves on a different level than public universities.
The honor code or honor systems is known by educators across the nation. The honor code is used to keep students from making bad decisions educational wise, for example, cheating and plagiarism, therefore, the honor is used to keep students inside the behavioral codes that the honor code has to offer. The honor code is very controversial because of the codes that the system delivers. The system is very influential to the students and creates a behavioral impact that allows the students to follow by the codes and to have complete freedom. The process of the honor code should be maintained due to the honesty and pledges of the students to increase their success.
“Since “everyone else” is cheating, they have no choice but to do the same to remain competitive. And there is growing evidence many students take these habits with them to college.” (McCabe, Donald and Pavela). More and more colleges are using the honor codes. The honor code has helped to prevent cheating.
The honor code has to be a very well researched and put together code. With a good code there will be a strict school and this might begin to stop most of the cheating going on at schools. While many of the schools are seeing much cheating going on an honor code can be used to see if it can have a chance at stopping most of the cheating going on. “ in many American high schools, with roughly two thirds of students acknowledging one or more incidents of explicit cheating in the last year. This data of bad cheating in schools can probably be turned around with an honor code that is well developed to stop the cheating.
