When a school system, such as some in the Shelby County Schools District, falls into the bottom 5% of the schools in the state based on standardized test scores and Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) reports, the school is eligible to participate in a program called Innovation Zone, I-Zone for short (Shelby County Schools, n.d.). I-Zone schools tend to receive perks or privileges that most typically schools do not receive. The I-Zone program provides additional grant money to support the schools that are enrolled in the program.
