Although our lives in America are far from perfect, the middle class has more than just the necessities. We expect to come home to a meal on the table and a form of transportation to get to work or school. We take such things for granted as many people in foreign countries do not even have a roof over their heads and and live on less than $1 a day. While these may be extreme cases, many people still live like this, “Three of every four poor people in developing countries live in rural areas—2.1 billion living on less than $2 a day and 880 million on less than $1 a day” (The World Bank). In America, these people would be able to strive, and it should be our goal to help allow those to come in that wish to do so. America would present them with many opportunities such as the chance to live in freedom, have a better chance of being prosperous, live under one of the best political systems in the world, receive and give their children a better education, and much more. Gregory Mantsios’ is the founder and director of the Murphy Institute. In his article, Class in America, he offers his view on how life changing class is, “from cradle to grave, class position has a significant impact on our well-being.
