The Pros And Cons Of Joining PHMC

I joined the Princeton Hidden Minority Council (PHMC) towards the end of my first semester at Princeton. PHMC is devoted towards advocating for first generation and low-income students on Princeton’s campus. Historically, first generation and low income students have been significantly underrepresented at Princeton, and we seek to make Princeton a more accessible and comfortable place through raising awareness of our presence, providing students with services, and connect low-income students with professional opportunities. As part of the tech committee, I am in charge of PHMC’s online presence. When I joined PHMC, we began one of our biggest projects of the year: our Class Confessions Facebook page. As we undertook this project, we faced many setbacks before we could call our project a success. When we began working on Class Confessions, it was just an idea that had to be implemented. As a group we began discussing specifics of the page: what the name would be, when to posts, how to get posts, who to target, who would do what job—ideas were coming from everyone. People disagreed. It was upsetting because of the amount of time we put in class confessions. We wanted to make an impact. This set back was something we were not expecting and we realized we had to go back and regroup. As we analyzed the low activity the page was receiving, we came up with a new intense marketing strategy. We had to reach out to students through several outlets. This set back helped me understand the difficulty of launching projects with a large audience. In order to gain the attention of other students, we had to give them attention first.
