When you join the military, you know it’s going to be difficult. George Washington and his men spent the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and boy were the conditions tough. There were many problems to deal with, but the main problem was soldiers only signing up to fight for six months or nine months. Those months will be up soon. As a soldier at Valley Forge, my time is currently up and I have decided to quit.

Your choices are to serve your country and win your independence or cower, lose, and have no freedom with more political power. Now I could see how people would want to leave the army. The living conditions are terrible: little food, poorly clothed, and illness & death. I can say for certain that I have that wish to leave the army, but my willpower is strong. Little food only lasts through the winter.
I wouldn’t sign up on my own however, but if I were drafted I would answer the call. It’s true that America doesn’t always know what’s best, but in situations like this the best that I could do as an individual is grin and bear it, doing what I can to help. I wouldn’t want to be a traitor to my own country. I don’t know if the guilt of abandoning my country would be any better than anything the war might do to me.
Leaving the military may have been the best and worst decision I have made during my life. The financial stress that has come from not having a job is almost more than I can handle. Adjusting to this new non-institutionalized life is very different than what I have become used to. Not being told how to do this or that every day is one change I enjoy. One of the outcomes of leaving the military that I dislike is not having a paycheck every two weeks.
But because of these reasons: The army needs me, my family, the hope of surviving, and the motivation as well as the inspiration, it helped me to make the right decision. Commitment, dedication, and motivation are the three most important values when joining the military. Background checks and months of training are required to ensure that the best is selected to stand strong as one for the best interest of all. Regardless of the requisites, hundreds of individuals devote their time to become part of the US military, unfortunately it is not meant for everyone. Even though the system tries to ensure that only the strong get chosen, it has been proven to be flawed. The debate as to whether a country should have mandatory military conscription has been discussed and practiced in places all over the globe. For the United States, implementing this would have several benefits from which the country could profit on. With this required aspect, there could be a promotion to the nation’s unity in which people would have a sense of equality to one another. Also, it would ensure all receive basic skills to place themselves further within other job careers. Finally, the mandatory service brings better awareness and participation with the government.
Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, I always had a dream of joining the military. Though it was a choice, I still did not have any inside information of what it would be like, and the requirements and specifics of the Army. It wasn't until 2005 when I decided to join the United States Army that all my concerns and questions were answered by a recruit; and I was guided through the whole process to enter and prep for the Army. If it was not for the confidences and motivation of my recruiter back in 2005, I might have not made my leap and probably would not be in this uniform today. Becoming a member of the United States Army recruiting team means having a physical and mental toughness in order to perform efficiently.
