My father had made some bad business deals and lost all of the family's money. When I was two years old, my dad went to debtor's prison. A few years later my dad went to the West Indies and never returned. Becoming a soldier, since my family didn't have any money, I saw the military as a great way to get a free education and to have a career. I entered the West Point Military Academy at the age of 18 and graduated in 1829 near the top of the class.
More than 180,000 people join the military each year, you might think that a lot of people but it’s not. The U.S. military is 241 years old and is bigger than it was when it started but if more people do not start joining it will soon cease to be in existence. The U.S. military has issues with wussification, their budget, tactical training, and regulations.
When you join the military, you know it’s going to be difficult. George Washington and his men spent the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and boy were the conditions tough. There were many problems to deal with, but the main problem was soldiers only signing up to fight for six months or nine months. Those months will be up soon. As a soldier at Valley Forge, my time is currently up and I have decided to quit.
Drafted or Willing. (A Discussion over the United States Draft) The United States draft was created to ensure that during times of war our numbers in battle would never become to strained or cause faltering. This was successful for many battles, and in war, but why did it stop? Some thought this was an unethical practice that took away the free will of a man to do as he pleased with his life.
Valley Forge: Should I Re-enlist Our men our dying off and I don’t know if we can bare these conditions much longer. It is the winter of 1777, and General Washington has quartered us at Valley Forge. Many of our men are deserting us or their re-enlistment point is arriving shortly.
Thomas Paine said in The American Crisis, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” (153). He was right. It is the winter of 1777-1778 in Valley Forge, 18 miles from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and conditions are awful. We have little to no food, there are many diseases such as smallpox and dysentery, and frostbite is taking many limbs.
“War. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing!” (Starr, 1970). I believe that we should bring our US troops home, we need security here back at home, the repercussions aren’t worth it, and war has never solved any of our problems except for creating more.
First off, the United States should get rid of the Draft because it would divide the Society. The United States has a very ugly history with the draft. There has been many draft dodgers, protests, and Anti War and Anti Draft demonstrations most commonly in the Vietnam War era. The protests over the draft got violent during the American Revolution. One example, that the draft would divide the society is To Protester’s
Solution and outcome: Bring our troops home, save lives and money. As the United Sates Secretary of State I’d advise the President to pull our troops out of Afghanistan. Obamas administration estimates that keeping 9,800 soldiers there at the end of 2105 would cost about twenty billion dollars, or 1.2 million dollars per soldier per year. We would be saving over $1 million per service member.
As we look at this issue of having a militia force, or standing together as one army to protect our frontier? You have to look at the idea of a militia force that is raised from the civil population to help supplement a regular army in an emergency situation. Now everyone wants to get more land, then have discussion about the political, economic, juridical and social powers of the government, and now you are showing everyone a perception of the army force. Now North America has become divided, due to three imperial power struggles for dominance. Or is this going to be more effective having a military force that would be based on a regular army With the militia system being successful in the opinion of those who claim it had led to victory in
My high school sweetheart joined the military and supported our family so I raised our children and he helped when he was able to be home. Now jobless and no prospects of finding a new job I did some research and found a program that would send me to school and cover a lot of the costs through JTO (Job Training Office). Getting my foot in the door for that training was a chore.
I had no idea what I was doing at the age of 18 of I was ready for a change. My first Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) was an Engineer a 12 Charlie; Bridge Crew member. My first duty station was Korea. My leadership in Korea was phenomenal, the comrade between the soldiers in the platoon was that kind of a relationship between siblings that respected and cared for each other regardless of the misunderstandings. My supervisors respected the privacy of every soldier within the platoon, I was never a witness of a soldiers being bash by a supervisor in front of their peers.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Military Spending? As the US economy tanked, the banks have been bailing out and the country losing its jobs, its military spending has continued to grow. For the past years, it is recorded to have increased more than 100%, which is very high compared to the height of Ronald Reagan’s presidency and the Cold War. The money allocated for the defense budget is used to purchase sophisticated weapons that often do not make it into production, but when they do, they are just too expensive to maintain.
Conscription in America has a long and varied history which can be traced back to the colonial militia. Throughout this history, conscription or more commonly known as “the draft” has been used as a means to fill the ranks of military forces without much consideration for any negative consequences. Despite many of the negative perceptions, I do believe it has served as a useful and effective tool in past conflicts. Having served my entire adult life in an all-volunteer military, I believe this type of military force is better equipped to fight our future wars. With all things considered and the absence of another World War, I believe the practice of conscription will remain solely in our history books.
While the military maybe a riskier job there are great benefits for it.
