For many decades it has been the president who is given the power to act solely on what he believes is best for our national interest when responding to a nuclear attack. Bruce Blair, in a dialogue about the president’s authority to launch a nuclear strike, clearly states that the system is meant to be quick and precise for time constraints. It is critical for there to be a system that works quickly. When detecting a nuclear attack heading towards the U.S., it is only a matter of minutes before impact. Consider how fast everything must happen in order for a quick reaction. Radar’s must first detect the missile heading towards the U.S., after that there is an early warning team that has 3 minutes to determine whether it is credible or not. Once the credibility is determined, the pentagon is noticed and then the President is reached. However, there is measures to insure that the most capable candidate is the one in command of our country’s arsenal. For one, there’s the 25th amendment which states that if the “Vice president and a majority of principal officers of the executive departments” believe that the president is incapable of fulfilling his duties as the president, then the Vice president can legally take over as the new president.
