World War II forces the United States to gather all their resources to create an atomic bomb before the Germans get to it. According to the atomicarchive.com, a secret program established by the U.S. Government later became known as the Manhattan project started in 1941. Led by J. Robert Oppenheimer, they were able to accomplish “Trinity” code name for the denotation of the first atomic bomb in Alamogordo, New Mexico. The power that was observed stun the scientist enough to write a petition to the president, warning him of the destructive power of the atomic bomb and that he should never resort to using such weapon (Szilard). Most of my articles are from the nonproliferation side which is why it is biased. Nuclear proliferation is not that bad as it does, in some way, decreased the likelihood of war. There are many countries who wish the extermination of nuclear weapons which is why the NPT was born, signed by 189 nations (Nuclear Non-Proliferation).There is also the matter of global security. Nations that currently have nuclear weapons don’t want to completely erase their whole nuclear arsenal because it would endanger their country. No one wants to go first at disarming their nuclear weapons which is why there is still a large amount nuclear warhead. It is hard to control because countries such as Pakistan and India who both have nuclear weapons are in dispute. Just like the Cold War with Russia, there is a chance of a nuclear war happening. Nuclear terrorism is also why it is hard to control. There has been documented cases of nuclear theft. If these weapons were to fall into the wrong hand, the potential threat will be at large. The thing is that nuclear weapons get stronger as the years goes by. New technology enables more yields on nuclear weapons. With the existence of these weapons, it is impossible to tell what the future might
