Culturally offensive mascots should not be allowed because it teaches people and children that it's okay to make inaccurate assumptions about a group of people they don’t even know. Culturally offensive mascots can show disrespect to different races and cultures, and can cause people to create stereotypes. However people think of the derogatory mascots as a way to honor the cultures and show pride for the people. The mascot Redskins makes people assume things about the natives. The Redskins make people think that all natives have red skin even though that is false information. There are multiple mascots that show inaccurate conceptions about the Natives. There are teams from little league all the way to college teams that are stereotypical. For example the Chiefs, Redskins, Commanders,, Nimrods, Cardinals, Warriors, Savages, Squaks, and a lot more. “If you ask, the answers are pretty clear: that the images are an inaccurate conception of Native Americans that’s from the past, that confines a group of peoples that is active, and has communities, and is very much alive and well today, as an artifact, rather than as a present group” (“When the School Mascot Is a Native American Stereotype”). This evidence proves that Native American groups say that the natives from the past and now are different and that the assumptions are wrong. These mascots are disrespectful to the natives and pressure people to create stereotypes for the cultures. However, people think that the mascots are a way to honor the indigenous people and other cultures. We shouldn’t use mascots to honor the different cultures instead we should honor them in a way that’s not mocking them.
