Online predators are individuals that prowl social media websites and online chat rooms, usually pretending to be a child, to either lure children to meet them where they will sexually abuse them, or to entice them to send personal pictures to the predator. As of 2015 there are 799,041 registered sex offenders in the United States. (PureSight, n.d.) A more recent method that online predators have been using to lure children is online gaming. In 2012, Microsoft, Disney, Sony, and Electronic Arts launched “Operation Game Over”, in which they shut down over 3,500 accounts belonging to registered sex offenders. (How Predators “Groom” Children While Gaming Online, 2016) There are numerous agencies both here and abroad that work to catch online predators.
