Polyester is an important component to consumers all around the globe. It is made from a fiber that can be manufactured into goods such as, clothes, furnishing, water bottles, balloons, hoses, and many more useful items. Most notably however, it has made a huge impact in the T-shirt industry. Where would the great disco days of the 70’s be without polyester clothing? It’s safe to say that polyester has become an important resource in everyday life, but how did such a commodity to the everyday consumer become produced? What environmental disadvantages of polyester can be distinguished among all the businesses and materials it requires to create the product? According to ICIS Chemical business, which is based in China, to construct Polyester, the company utilizes resources such as purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and dimethyl terephthalate (Guy). Another known element also used in the production of polyester is monoethylene glycol (MEG).The key components of producing polyester is the use of petroleum, coal, water, and air. The reason for China thriving in the polyester/T-shirt industry is, because of their abundance in petroleum and coal.
