Did you know that since 2013 there have been 291 school shootings in the United States (Wise, 2018)? However, according to CNN (2018), “the Pew Research Center in 2017 found that 42% of people in the US live in households with guns.” Less than ⅓ of Americans actually own guns. School shootings and other gun violent related cases within America leaves the nation wondering if there should be stricter gun control laws. In 1993 the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act was passed and since then there have been many controversies debating on whether or not the bill has been effective. Having the right to obtain, according to the second Amendment of the US Constitution, gives one the ability to believe that they are powerful, protected, and superior. Protection, recreational use, hunting, hobbying, and simply having the right to have one are all reasons why people own guns. However, even though it may seem that guns are used to its greatest benefit and not of harm, many cases show the negative correlation that guns and people have with one another. Due to the negative utilization of guns, there have been laws set in place dating all the way back to the 1930s that focused on gun control. One law recently in particular is the Brady Bill of 1993. In 1993 Secretary press James Brady was shot in the head in an attempt to kill former president Ronald Reagan. This law mandates that each and every citizen wanting to obtain a firearm would have to go thru an extensive background check that would prevent those under the legislation of 1968. As stated by Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review, gun violence became prevalent in the inner-city youth in 1985. Cases show Americans who are under the age of 25 die due to gunshot wounds (Elaine Cox, 2015). Many of these cases are related to homicides. One relevant issue happening is adolescents being able to get hold of a firearm weapon in general, but bring it to public facilities such as schools. Although The Brady Bill enforces background checks on those who purchased firearms, many parents who are able to own them often neglect the responsibility to take the necessary precaution on securing their weapons and keeping them out of reach of their children. One particular case was one of a four year old in Pennsylvania which led to his death. He had found his parent’s revolver and began playing with it and eventually pulled the trigger that took his life. The number of tragedies similar to this one comes by the thousands. Many children are curious and often adventurous and tend to search thru things and some of which can be very dangerous or even deadly. While some are precarious, there are those who have an initial bad intent to use firearms to harm or kill others.
