In 1987, the bill that would soon become a law and make buying guns safer was introduced in congress. This bill was named after James Brady hints the name, “Brady Bill.” James Brady was the White House Press Secretary at the time. He was permanently disabled after receiving a gunshot wound to his forehead in 1981, in the attempted Ronald Reagan assassination. This bill required licensed firearms importers, manufactures, or dealers to wait five days before selling a handgun to another person not licensed under federal law. However the bill does have some exceptions to the five day waiting period. For example if the purchaser gives some valid reason such as a life threat of the purchaser or any member of the same household the waiting period maybe waivered. James Brady’s wife, Sarah Brady, became very active the Gun Control Movement following the tragedy that disabled her husband. She became the chairperson of Handgun Control, Inc. in 1989. Only two years later she became the chairperson of the Center to Prevent Hand Gun Violence. Sarah Brady and gun control proponents believed handguns were being sold to easily to the public. The Gun Control Act of 1968 made it illegal to sell firearms to drug addicts, felons, or anyone in general that had done a single thing wrong. Once the back ground check is complete there is a five day waiting period, but in some cases there are exceptions. Once the five day waiting period is up as long as the purchaser has a background free of any felony charges then the purchase can be made. The gun is registered to the buyer and has a serial code on all parts of the weapon. At anytime if the weapon is used for a crime and is taken for evidence the police will be able to trace the gun back to person the gun is registered
