The Atomic Bomb “My object is to save as many American lives as possible but I also have a humane feeling for the women and children in Japan '' (Truman, 1945). During World War ll scientists first developed nuclear weapon technology. The code name for America to develop a functional atomic bomb was called The Manhattan Project. These bombs would later be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan for the war effort. Although the two atomic bombs killed thousands of innocent civilians the decision to drop the atomic bombs was a military necessity because it saved American troops, it helped shorten the war, and the Japanese were given fair warning and could have surrendered. The bombs “the Little Boy” and “the Fat Man” saved thousands of American troops. Japanese troops were known for fighting till the death which would have caused the war to go on longer and America would have suffered more casualties. “U.S. Army Chief of staff George Marshall thought the Americans would suffer 31,000 casualties in the first 30 days, while Admiral Ernest King, Chief of Naval Operations, put them between 31,000 and 41,000” (Atomic Bomb, 2023). On August 14th, 1945 the Japanese Emperor announced their surrender. “By the summer of 1945 the American military was exhausted, and the sheer number of troops needed for Operation Downfall meant that not only would the troops in the Pacific have to male one more landing, but even many of those troops whose valor and sacrifice had brought an end to the Nazi Third Reich were sent to be sent Pacific” (Atomic Bomb, 2023).
