The Pros And Cons Of The Bombing Of Hiroshima

On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city, Hiroshima. This, in turn, killed over 90,000 people both before and after the collision and turned 4 square miles of the city into rubble. Now, the question that comes to mind; Was dropping the bomb on Hiroshima the correct thing to do? The answer I have come up with is that it was, in fact, a good decision. It helped the war in the Pacific end quicker and decrease the number of casualties. To start it off, one of the positive outcomes of the bombing of Hiroshima is that it led to the ending of the war in the Pacific. Japan had launched an attack on Pearl Harbor that killed about 2,000 American citizens on December 7, 1941. Additionally, the attack had disabled the U.S. Pacific Fleet, which had a non-combatant status at the time. This proved, that Japan not only posed a great threat to the U.S. but also the rest of the Allies. With the attack being both brutal and unexpected, the only reasonable thing to do was to eliminate the possible threat of more casualties. Some may argue that the dropping of the bomb was both unjustified and inhuman, as it killed many innocent Japanese civilians. While taking that into consideration, I still firmly believe the U.S. did it for the greater good of humanity. The fact of the matter is, there would have been many more innocent lives lost if the war would have continued, as I’ve mentioned before. Japan had made it more than clear that they weren’t going to surrender easily, and drastic measures had to be taken. The way I see it, there are times where you have to be willing to abandon your humanity in order to change anything, and that is just what the U.S.
