There was recent talk about a petition calling for the secession of Texas from the United States. Although this movement never had any substance, it got many Americans wondering if Texas could actually secede, and that if it did, how it would fare on its own. Although Texas has the economy, resources and capital, geography, and population to be its own country, there are too many disadvantages the state would face if it decided to go solo. First and foremost would be the issue of Texas national security; Texas would have to create a national army from scratch and would have a weak defense in its first few years of existence. In addition to issues of security, Texas would have to deal with long-term resource management due to the fact that its main resource (oil) is not sustainable.
Texas Annexed to the United States On February 19, 1846, Texas was annexed to the United States of America. After many years of never-ending negotiations, Texas was finally admitted into the Union. Despite gaining independence, Texas would continue to face several problems. Texas, at this time, did not have enough forces to defend itself, which meant that they could be vulnerable to an attack from Mexico.
A constitution is the fundamental law by which a nation or a state is governed and organized. It establishes the framework of government, delegates the powers and duties of governmental bodies, and defines the relationship between the government and their citizens. Texas current constitution was adopted in 1876, and since then Texas voters have approved more than 467 amendments to this document. The word “amendment” is defined as the act or process of changing the words or the meaning of a law or document (constitution). Throughout this essay I will explain the rules for amending the Texas Constitution, the attempts made at constitutional reforms during the 1970s, explain why constitutional reforms were attempted and why it ultimately failed.
There are two distinct sides when it comes to whether or not the Texas constitution should be rewritten. There is the side that favors rewriting the constitution and those who oppose writing a new constitution. Each side has four very strong argument points they like to use when it comes to discussing the Texas Constitution. Those who favor rewriting the constitution say that our current document is unnecessarily long and completely outdated for today’s modern society. This argument holds true when we take into account that “The Texas Constitution is the second longest in the United States”.
January of 1901 Texas seemed boring for those Texans that were there at the time, But the 20th century was just getting started when one drop of the gooey, black substance that changed Texas in seconds, Oil is its name! January, 1901, on a little hill called Spindletop oil sprouted into a beautiful rose. It made many opportunities in Texas and the US. Oil was used for lots of things like Asphalt (for paving roads), gasoline to fuel cars, trucks, etc. Oil would now be the economic engine for Texas, oil would make a gigantic impact on Texas as a whole.
Throughout history, the American Continental Army was depicted as strong, dominant, and filled with perseverance, however it appears as though their strength was missing at the Battle of Quebec. The Battle of Quebec occurred on December 31, 1775 and lasted until January 1, 1776. It was a battle in which the Province of Quebec was covered in the same red as the victors’ coats. The attempt to capture Quebec concluded in a disastrous defeat for the Americans that was due to factors such as disparities in the level of experiences between the leaders, the disproportion of armies, freezing weather, weapons/fortification, and challenging terrain. The Battle of Quebec was a battle of great significance as it was “the first major war defeat for the
All while Texas added 2.2 million jobs and more than 6 million people to its population rolls.” This is just the beginning, in an article called “The clean power plan” that will be signed in Dallas to help decrease levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It’s a very interesting article that states, “Texas has twice as much wind power as any state in the
In this essay, we will be discussing the historical context of The Outsiders. The time period when this book was being written was when the United States was increasing its activity in Vietnam, and the civil rights movement was gaining momentum, and the Beats movement of the 1950s was transitioning into the hippie movement of the 1960s. But yet not one of these political and social movements was referenced in the book. The focus of the novel is instead on class and the way it affects these specific teenagers. When the United States were getting involved in the Vietnam war, they were afraid that communism would have spread to South Vietnam and the rest of Asia.
Texas is one of the fastest growing states in the
“Kansas’ personal income grew 1.4 percent in the last year — lower than the region’s 2.2 percent rate and the 2.7 percent rate for the United States. And the state was behind in both measurements over the last five years as well” (Abouhalkah). This shows that the people of Kansas are not taking in as much income as their counterparts in the midwest and even the entire country. Like it also says in the quote that Kansas has been behind for the past five years, all of them being under Governor Brownback. “Kansas has lost nearly 4,000 jobs in May, trailing both the national trend and neighboring Missouri, which added 6,600 jobs” (Berman).
When oil was first found in Texas it changed things financially for the state, but the social changes it brought with it were just as important. Finding oil in Texas brought in new jobs for Mexican Americans and African Americans, higher divorce rates, new towns, and helped schools. African Americans and Mexican Americans couldn't get jobs on oil rigs, but the oil industry gave them spin off jobs. The spin off jobs were jobs that require no skill for example, carrying luggage, cleaning house, clearing land, and doing laundry. Oil changed the lives of Mexican and African Americans in many ways, for example oil offered a chance to have higher wages and make more money .Oil also helped with the education of African and Mexican Americans,
The framers of the Texas Executive established a system that was designed to check the powers of the government. As opposed to the US Constitution that vested the power of the executive in the president of the nation (Berry, 1385), the Texas Constitution sought to ensure that the state did not have the excess powers. As such, they came up with a plural system where a variety of individuals make up the executive branch of the state (Texas State Government at a Glance). While the governor of the state remains as the highest ranking officials in the state, they hold the least of powers in the plural system.
After weighing in the positives and negatives a great amount of people including myself can say that the positives about Texas outweighs the negatives. People have found Texas a great place to live, especially to build a career, because it has the infrastructure and the circumstances that raise job establishment and job success. Most of people that do live in Texas have learn to deal with the minor problems because it is definitely worth
The gun ownership in this specific state is more accessible and let qualified applicants carry any firearms that are under the limitations of the law provided. In addition, citizens, and including the majority of responsible law abiding gun owners, understand we should change the laws related to gun control in the state of Texas. Having in mind that states with the most gun laws tend to have the fewest guns deaths. The
As a result of it being ranked so high, the state must have a lot of money. Another reason it’s population can affect economy is “Service industries account for the the largest portion of Colorado’s employment” ( world book “Colorado”). The reason why
