After the Persian war and having spent money for the Delian League, the individuals living in ancient Greece must have found themselves hoping for a better future. The Periclean Building Program was introduced by Pericles in hopes of beautifying Athens, building temples, and providing free theater. While this has its benefits, there were some drawbacks to this program such as using the money meant to defend the city-states in the Delian League. The debate groups were able to use both pros and cons to argue the future of their city states. While facing the audience the participants of the debate used two very effective ways to sway the opinions of the audience. The most effective oratory techniques displayed during this debate were the use of pathos, and logos. Both groups were able to use pathos, or emotions, to defend their arguments. Individuals in this debate had logical arguments they defended using proof and details. This makes a debate more credible due to the proof of the statements being made. Using logos removes the doubt when listening to a debate by providing facts to maintain the audience’s trust. One individual who displayed this was the naval member who used past battles he fought in, such as the battle of Solomos, to prove to the audience that other city-states are not as strong as they are due to their victories. While Pericles’s speech was well presented and organized in a logical way. His statements were backed up with proof and he added pathos in his statements to also find the empathy in the audience. While those which were against the Periclean Building Program backed up their arguments that Pericles was keeping the money for himself with facts.
