When you go to a restaurant do you order a soda? Do you know how much sugar is in one beverage, do you know how much sugar you consume if you get a refill? You most likely don’t know or just don’t care. The NYC soda ban is a good thing and is a step in the right direction. Beverages with excess amounts of sugar are bad for your health and need to be consumed in limited amounts, the soda ban can help with that. People who are used to buying ridiculously large sodas already don’t value their health and are going to do whatever they want. If they are determined they will find a way around the ban. About 21.3% of NYC children ages 6-11 are obese compared to 19.6% nationally. “Americans consume about 200-300 more calories per day than 30 years ago, with the largest single increase due to sugar-sweetened drinks” according to Reversing the Epidemic: The New York City Obesity Task Force Plan to Prevent and Control Obesity article that was provided in the lesson. And a shocking 57 gallons of soft drinks are consumed each year by the average American. This is an important topic for our youth because the health issues that come with obesity are scary. You have diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and more these are all potentially fatal. A common argument could be that it won't be effective because people are going to eat what they want, and if they want to consume more than the recommended amount of soda they will find a way around the ban. Instead of being able to buy one large soda they can buy two or three small sodas. Some will undermine the ban and buy however much sugary beverages they want, but this ban will make it more inconvenient and establishments that go against the ban will get a big fine. This ban can open the eyes of those who weren’t informed about the dangers of obesity and how sugary beverages play a big part in it. In the end the ban would be there to discourage people from
