In addition to a huge effect on agriculture, they also had very seirious unintended consequences in slavery. The increased mechanization of the agriculture market, this deeply
I would think using the word “racist” when discussing the events from the 1860s and the Civil War would be appropriate. Quite frankly, there is almost no way not to use it, It was a major contradicting issue back then. How could someone state, “God himself has made them usefulness as slaves, and requires us to employ them as such,” and “Our Heavenly Father has made us to rule, and the Negroes to serve,” (Pictures of Slavery and Anti-Slavery: Advantages of Negro Slavery and the Benefits of Negro Freedom Morally, Socially, and Politically by John Bell Robinson) and it not be considered racist. This is a prime example of someone judging and stereotyping a human being just because their skin is a different color.
Land of the free and home of the brave. America is a country that is known for its freedom worldwide. Many abandoned their own country in order to try and live a perfect life in America, where they will not be discriminated against no matter what nationality, sex or religion an individual is. America was not always this promising to minorities mid 1800’s. America had huge faults such as slavery which later was one of the reasons the north and south separated and went to war with each other.
The absence of humanitarian concerns greatly influenced the treatment of these slaves. The slaves were treated horribly due to the laziness, the greediness, and the uncaringness of the Europeans. The Europeans were lazy in
Labor systems changed during this time period because of the increase demand for goods and labor. For example with an increase in agriculture and the production of goods, the demand for slaves grew. With the demand for slaves, empires traded slaves for goods from the empire they traded with. Trade facilitated the change of labor system by allowing slaves from Africa, which in conclusion benefited trade among those empires and increased their wealth and power. Slaves helped with agriculture and worked in crops such as sugar, cotton, and coffee.
During the slave trade it was inhumane and violence, million of African people and children were taken away from their home to work in the new world. The slave trade took away many productive workers from Africa which they are skilled in farming and other establishment. The captain of the ship would try to enlarge their profit by trying to fit as many slaves as possible in the new world. Sometime slaves are captured and placed into dungeon with other captives. People would protests to be released but the two kings was corrupted and demanding
Even today the Americas are known for rich farmlands and efficient farming. The issue was that the demand for American silver and crops meant slaves were made to work harder, which would shorten their lifespan. This, in turn, prompted Europeans to search for even more slaves across the ocean, which would spark the whole cycle again like a warped perpetual motion
Tensions rose across the country from those in support support of slavery and those opposed. Many states wanted to outlaw slavery while others adamantly defended it because it was the main institution with a high and consistent revenue. Ultimately, the disagreements over slavery are what lead to the Civil War. The country divided into an “Us versus Them” situation which lead to both sides having growing support for their views and making the groups less susceptible to an agreement. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves from confederate states.
This caused two changes in the economy, more land was needed to make more natural resources, and this called for more labor to work the land, ultimately growing the demand of more slaves. The cycle was able to continue
This documentary discusses owning slaves, and I do not think owning slaves was right or that it is a good idea. I think owning slaves was degrading and inhumane because of how they were treated. I believe that no one should have the right to possess individuals. Also, I read an article which talked about back in 1600’s slavery flourished in the South; everybody had large plantations growing cotton, tobacco, and other crops. Plus, the plantations required many laborers and slavery was not profitable in the North, because economic interest centered on small farms and industries.
Slavery started as a way for Europeans to trade rum, firearms, and other goods to other countries in exchange for slaves, which were then used as a form of cheap labor. Europe typically traded with Africa, as the Europeans could offer items Africa couldn’t, such as manufactured goods. Africa then traded with America, in which they offered slaves in exchange for other goods, and America went to trade with Europe, as America produced the raw materials that Europe was lacking. This trade system is today known as the triangular trade, and played part in an immediate boost of the economies in this section of the world. While this trade route was beneficial to those who partook in it, it eventually had negative lasting effects on Africa.
