Malaria has caused millions of deaths, most of those being children under the age of five years old. Malaria occurs when a mosquito bites a human and releases the malaria-causing parasite called the Plasmodium parasite. The main way of fighting the disease is to prevent the disease from being transmitted as the technology to stop it after transmission does not exist. Three methods of prevention were provided, the first being to genetically engineer mosquitoes that do not have the capability of transmitting the disease. The second method is to genetically engineer the mosquitoes to not procreate and hope a different type of mosquito that is not prone to spread the disease replaces it. The last method is to use insecticide and netting to prevent the mosquitoes from biting humans and transmitting the disease. This method would work in the long run because the gene that makes them not transmit the disease would be dominant, over time the population of mosquitoes that do not transmit the disease would grow(Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell). This appears to be a perfect solution, however, this technology is extremely new and there could be unforeseen consequences as genetic engineering has not been done at this scale before. While I believe that in the long run, this method could be extremely effective and potentially eradicate Malaria, its potential risk is too great and it is not a quick solution for a disease that claims half a million children
