In this essay I will be analysing the poster for ‘The Purge’ which is in the genre horror that came out in 2013.The role of film posters are to advertise for the upcoming film so people can see what the film is about before seeing the film and will be more likely go and watch the film, also this means the profit will be increased. The genre of ‘The Purge’ is horror/thriller, we know this because of the way he is looking down might connote he is looking at something/someone he killed and is looking amused with what he has achieved. We also know it is a horror is by the colour scheme which is very dark and gloomy and faded out as it goes back which connotes night-time. The shadowy lighting is a typical convention like the gallows poster and poltergeist. At the bottom of the ’the purge’ poster, they have included the selling line which is hashtag; survive the night, by using the hashtag is a good way to get the movie poster noticed as the film would be everywhere on social sites such as twitter and Facebook. This will then attract a wider audience to the film as more people will see this as a lot of people have social media and have internet so they can easily access the sites with reviews on and ratings to see if they would be interested in going to see the film. This is also a good way to connect the audience to the movie as they may feel more involved and feel like they would be more connected to the film and might like the producers more as they interact with their audience more than others do. The words ‘survive the night’ also tell us that there is a lot of death, violence and danger in the movie, which is not only typical elements of a horror movie, but this is also exciting the audience more because we get a thrill off being scared and unknowing what is coming
