“If a man could have half his wishes, he would double his troubles.” This quote by Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard’s Almanac explains how a person’s drive to achieve a particular goal can narrow one’s perspective, and encourage the fantasy that success is an endeavor that will solve all life’s difficulties. Uncounted people know the matured saying, “Be careful for what you wish for,” this quote communicates the meaning of the previous statement by Benjamin Franklin. The quote also describes that every so often, if you succeed, there can be multiple outcomes. Once numerous people achieve success, "half his wishes" being the success, it is implied by Franklin that life is worse after the success.

When the person is in this situation they believe that they have completed life, due to the fact they achieved their hardest goal. This problem mostly develops from people having above average expectations of themselves, and setting almost impossible goals. An example of this being in 2006, when President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, set a goal to achieve independence of refining petroleum in his country. But after they achieved independence, there was never an attempt to move forward. The standstill was due to everyone being comfortable in the circumstances, and believing that there was no possibility of improvement. (Smartboiz). Success can have very diverse effects based on the person it is affecting. For the people of Nigeria in 2006, you could say success was somewhat disastrous, because no one attempted to move on after they achieved their success.
