To fully appreciate the accomplishments of the Kilgore College Rangerettes, one must first delve into their background and foundation. The Rangerettes are linked to dance because their routine is considered a choreographed dance. The Rangerettes' involvement in football is quintessential to their origin. Lastly, the Rangerettes' evoke Texas pride with their uniforms designed to represent the Texas flag. Under close inspection, three East Texan cultures can be extrapolated from the Rangerettes: football, dance and Texas pride. The highly regarded claim of drill team members and directors is that students learn skills that the classroom cannot teach: “self-assurance, grooming, good manners, self-discipline, physical fitness, poise… share with others, to set goal… reinforced the values that parents emphasized…” (Pennington, Joyce E). Drill team members are regarded as athletes, and are held to the same standards. This means daily practices, weekly workouts, and excused dismissal from classes. Moreover, the same amount of commitment and dedication is expected of members. If the school is large enough, there are usually two per school: one varsity and one junior varsity. The Rangerettes mimicked the Texas flag with their uniform to encapsulate independence and uniqueness that is often associated with the Texas flag. Based on their global popularity, they display these concepts with the same fervor; their choreographic drills are created by the team director, and rarely are they based from routines of other teams.
In conclusion, there are subtle differences between cheerleading, pep-squads and drill-teams: attire, size, and routine. However, each succession of dance/cheer group has built off of the predecessor to create its own, distinctive routine. In the case of The Rangerettes, they are the creators of the term Drill Team.
