The Reformation set the stage for the modern world because it changed the way people thought of the Catholic Church. Before the Reformation, people’s lives were devoted wholly to the Catholic Church, but some people like Martin Luther, a man who questioned the church’s ways and started a new religion called Lutheranism, believed that the church’s intentions were actually corrupted and sinful. Once Martin Luther scrutinized the actions of the church, he realized that salvation wasn’t found by torturing oneself to pay for their sins in their present lives, or even buying pieces of paper, indulgences, that were presumed to save them from purgatory.
