Chapter 5 “The Revolutionary Era: Crossroads of Freedom,” This chapter focuses on Revolutionary era and the war between Britain and the colonies. It shed light on the lives of the African Americans during the war and the decisions they made to fight with or against the colonies they were enslaved in. The first important topic is about Thomas Peters fight to get his freedom.
What does it mean to be “free”? Freedom is where you have the ability to do whatever you want without the restraint of others. Achieving freedom was the desire and goal that colonists and revolutionaries pursued throughout the Revolutionary War and many believed was a god given right to man. But the desire for freedom came with its and struggles and freedom did not come easy. In fact, many were not willing to fight for freedom due their fear of British government and their rule over the colonies.
Freedom, to me, is being in control of yourself without having anyone else rule over you. It is having the option to make your own decisions. In the movie, William Wallace leads a whole entire army on the belief that once they defeat the Longshanks, they will finally have true freedom. When they beat the British army, the Scottish were free and no longer required to follow the British’s rules. Unfortunately, America has not always been this way; people of different races were treated like trash on the sidewalk. Frederick Douglass had a first-hand experience to this treatment, and he knew what it was like before America allowed everyone to actually be “free”.

The war was motivated by high taxation, such as Stamps Act, that British offered to Colonial people and unequal treatment that Colonial people went through.
What does it mean to be free? I think to be free means to be able to live life in the greatest way possible. One should have enough freedom. But have limits on freedom in certain cases, for example if one person uses their freedom to harm others. There are three acknowledged topics of freedom people want all over the world; Freedom to have an education, Freedom from discrimination, and the freedom of equality.

Freedom is the correction to do what he/she wants, live life, and eat what he/she wants. How do we live free? We live free by not judging other people’s freedom rights.
