Liberty Mutual creates an ad to persuade viewers to switch to their insurance. The first rhetoric technique used is pathos when Liberty Mutual says, “You totaled your brand new car. Nobody’s hurt, but there will still be pain.” People have either been in an accident and understand the emotions involved, or they have not and worry about what will happen in an accident. The emotional response is fear over the rising payments, and regret over being in an accident.
For the most part I agree with the writer idea. I like what the writer said how the justice was served by the court. Kinkl murdered 4 people and attempted 26 murder case, so he deserve 112 years to be in prison. Even though Kinkl has a mental disorder problem, he was a danger to the community and needed to be watched by the government for the public safety. The audience can clearly see what happened on the Kiniakl cause from the court report that is presented.

Dear Prof. Ulibarri, As I was sitting in the library writing this paper, I was glad that we had gone so in depth into all the rhetorical strategies in class. I started by memorizing what each rhetorical strategy was and how it was used to persuade the reader I then looked up examples of each one so it would be easier for me to locate them in the text of Freakonomics. I then re-read the chapter I chose and highlighted the rhetorical strategies I found. From there I found quotes in the text to back it up and identified how the authors, Levitt and Dubner used them to persuade readers. After that I took a look at the index of templates in They Say I Say to choose which templates I would use to begin the sentences of every beginning paragraph
The patient medical form, as a genre primarily used for information gathering and record keeping, is structured in such a way that it allows the reader the necessary information concerning the patient’s past medical history, as well as any other relevant or current information that would aid the physician in constructing diagnosis and treatment. This is another example of the rhetoric appeal for the genre. The audience of the genre, the patient when filling out the form, gets a sense of a __________ due the genre’s writing structure and rhetor. The rhetor utilizes basic vocabulary so that even an average person, even illiterate in the field of medicine is well aware about what is being asked.
On October 15th, 2016 Austin Community College’s Department of History and the Diversion of Social and Behavioral Sciences created a history symposium. This symposium consisted of 2 speakers, Theresa Jach and Kemp Dixon, who spoke about convict leasing and the law east of the Pecos. Throughout Theresa’s speech she showed us the similarities between convict leasing and slavery in the early years of American history. She reminds us that while slavery has been abolished, the enslavement of individuals who have been convicted of a crime is still legal and allows the state to have the opportunity to make a profit off of keeping correction facilities full. Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” examines the proposal of consuming human flesh in order to solve the dilemma of the Potato Famine, in which drought was exacerbated by crop failures, and this tribulation of the Irish was largely snubbed by English landowners. His ironic persona (speaker), is one of confidence, reason, and worth. In addition, this persona presents a multitude of rhetorical strategies to prepare the audience for this overly deranged proposal, ranging from juxtapositions, to using emotion, reason, and credibility, to persuade the reader. Therefore, the ironic persona in “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift illustrates a wide assortment of rhetorical devices to convey the solution to the Potato Famine, and more broadly, Swift intended this ironic platform to serve as an expository of the avarice of landowners and their gain for self-interest.
In the speech “How to use a paper towel” performed for TED in 2012, Joe Smith delivered an interesting and intriguing speech on how to better use paper towels, to a room of executives and the video would soon be shared with millions. He used a style of speech that although lacking complexity and info at times most definitely kept people watching and listening. Small jokes and simplicity made the speech digestible, comprehensible, and potent. The mode of logic used by Joe Smith is Logos, his use of logos was represented by his use of statistics in the beginning and end of his speech.
A Modest Proposal was written in the early 1700’s and about the starving people of Ireland, by Jonathan Swift. Not only were the people who were ruling the country awful, there were people who were starving, and the gap between the rich and the poor was immense. He uses brutal satire and irony to express his irritation with the countries lack there of ideas on how to solve the problems afflicting it. Swift uses rhetorical devices throughout the essay to build support for the solution that the persona he created has stated. Which is the idea of using infants as a primary source of food.
Hispanic College Enrollment Ad council campaigns have been focusing on how to produce an impact to many people’s lives and influencing them to see education in a whole new different way. The campaigns in order to grab attention use rhetorical strategies to persuade the audience. In “Backpack vs Briefcases”,written by Laura Bolin Carroll defines rhetoric as the way we use our language and images to persuade (46). Rhetorical strategies used in many campaigns and stated in Carroll’s essay are ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos, is the appeal to ethics, and it is a means, convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader, pathos is the emotional effect that is created to convince, and logos is the logical appeal to the audience.
On February 22, 2017, I had the pleasure of hearing Attorney Carlos Moore speak at the “Activism as an Attorney” event at the University of Mississippi. Dr. Moore spoke about his personal experiences as a civil rights attorney. He encouraged his audience to always take a stand and never be afraid to fight for what is right regardless of the presented circumstances. He even stated that, “If God brings you to it, he will bring you through it.” Without hesitation, Dr. Moore explained how African-Americans deserved the right to be treated as first class citizens because we are just as good as anyone else.
1) Of the three primary units we have completed in this course, the most challenging unit for me was the argument (persuasion) unit. I was surprised at how much I struggled both in the pre-writing process and in the writing process. To begin with, because I love arguments, I had trouble choosing a topic. In the end, I decided to challenge myself with the policy that requires sex offender to be added to a public registry policy. Instead of going with my initial stance (opposition), I decided to flip the scrip and argue the opposite of what I believe (proposition).
During Super Bowl Sunday, millions of people across the globe tune in to watch the game while also gawking at some of the most popular commercials of the year. Coca-Cola presented its commercial “Love Story” during this past Super Bowl. They are known for having memorable and popular advertisements, this past one was no different. “Love Story” persuades the average person to drink a Coke with any meal along with the ones they cherish.
Rhetorical Analysis of Colgate Advertisement Most people take care of their teeth, and in doing such, need to buy products to keep their teeth clean, and healthy. Advertisements for a toothpaste company need to be persuasive to their customers so they can keep the business. Color schemes, rhetoric, statistics, and even celebrity endorsements can all be used in advertisements to hook a customer on a product. Dental hygiene products are extremely important to some, and companies must be careful, and meticulous about how their merchandise is being portrayed.
