What were some important inventions of the 1920-1940s and how did they affect the people of the era? Maddy Hilkemeier English III H 9 Oct. 2015 Period 2 “Hundreds of items were invented in the 20th century, changing the way the world operated. Many of these inventions seem benign now, while others served as precursors to advanced models” (Richard). The book To Kill a Mockingbird was written in the mid-1930s and it was during this era that many useful items were invented. During this time there was a rapid increase of innovations that ranged anywhere from the game of monopoly to a wooden bathing suit, or something more efficient such as LDS medicine.
The “Roaring” 20s In the early 1920s, people were celebrating. World War I ended in November of 1918, and many people were overjoyed. About 4.7 million American men served in the military, and the United States suffered a total of 436,516 casualties, with 116,516 dead. World War I is often referred to as “The Great War” and “The War to end all Wars”.
The 1920’s was an eventful decade. Though with all the events, the two ways of living, Conservative and Liberal, clashed often. This rise in tension is credited to the spread of the radio, the 19th Amendment, and the Great War. The radio began to become more and more of a household necessity in the 1920’s decade.

Andy Vo Andrew Pham Michael Savic Mrs. Grimshaw AP US 13 February 2023 1920s Group LEQ The United States entered into the First World War in 1917, leading to many changes for the country. After years of fighting, President Woodrow Wilson goes to the Versailles Conference with his 14 Points, outlining his beliefs for world peace and the League of Nations. However, Americans were tired of the conflicts with European nations and wanted to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. The ending of World War I led to a new wave of immigrants and technologies to the United States.
Picture it: New York, 1920, automobiles filled with flappers and Jazz music flooding the streets, a new age is here. Now this setting did not always occur in the country. The women would wear modest clothing, every daily task was done by hand, social standards were set no matter your race, and drinking became a serious problem despite your age or gender. However this all came to an end during the American’s Golden Age. The 1920s was a time in the country’s history where gender was defined, industries boomed, and political problems arose.
The Roaring Twenties was an era of change in Canada that marked the transition from traditional to modern. This decade saw a major shift in the way of life like, culture, music, and fashion in the country. There are several reasons why the Roaring Twenties was the best time in Canada, including the booming economy, advances in technology, and social changes. One of the key reasons why the Roaring Twenties was the best time in Canada was the economic boom that led this era.
Emma Lynch Mr. Holland APUSH January 27, 2017 Roaring 20s DBQ The 1920s appeared to be a period of turning inward for Americans, as they had been disillusioned and damaged by World War I. President Warren G. Harding had coined the term ‘a return to normalcy’, which was a nostalgic vision of American society with traditional values and roles, and was widely accepted and eagerly embraced by the population. It was during this time that America experienced “The Roaring Twenties”, an outstanding period of prosperity. There was also a significant shift from an agrarian society to an industrial society, which as a result, caused tremendous tension between traditionalists and modernists.
Feel the smooth jazz notes go through your body and straight into your feet, and before you know it you’re dancing in a dimly lit speakeasy while the colorful band plays a lively tune. Your date, a flapper, is smoking and drinking right next to you, along with important political leaders of your city. The room is full of promise, and devoid of concern, alcohol is illegal to everybody, yet everybody is drinking. Your back out onto the dance floor, and dancing the night away spending your time doing something perfectly illegal. That is what a normal weekend night consisted of for most adults during the era called The Jazz Age, more commonly referred to as the Roaring Twenties.
While there were many reforms between 1920-and 1970, the reforms made during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1960s have had the most longer lasting effect on the United States. The 1920s saw a period with the greatest social reform. Americans were beginning to realize that there was more to life than working, in respect to the fact during the 1920s, “Americans spent more and more of their income on leisure activities like vacations, movies, and sporting events” (Foner 783). The rapid expansion of industries causing the development of the middle class is a primary reason why Americans were able to enjoy leisure activities since the had a steady income coming in. The use of technology increased during this decade, as people were able to afford radios and phonographs.
Throughout the history of America, we as a nation have gone through many unique time periods. Whether it was during the colonial times where we fought for revolution or during the age of Manifest Destiny where we migrated West to fulfill our destiny or when we were battling through the Great Depression to fix and stabilize our economy all of these different times we have been through still bears an impact on our society as a whole today. A time period in specific I will be talking about is the Roaring 20s. The 1920s was an era of social and political change which sent America into the modern age, where for the first time Americans actually lived more in cities than farms. Along with that America itself doubled their total wealth in the span
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
The economy in the United States over most of the 1920s was revolutionary for everyday men and women. It brought about a sense of economic prosperity that many had never seen before in their lifetimes. This sense of prosperity came about from several primary sources: America’s economy becoming business-centric, technological improvement, wage increases, and the creation of several new industries. Despite the common misconception that the economy was always “roaring” throughout the 1920s, the United States experienced a terrible post-war recession during the first two years of the decade (771, GML). It was not until the new industries of aviation, electronics, and automobiles arose that the economy bounced back and began to boom (771, GML).
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
