From pages 80 to 82, we learn that the refugee camp it says that ‘Salva made up his mind. He would walk south to Kenya… crowds of other boys followed him. Nobody talked about it, but by the end of the first day Salva had become the leader of a group of about fifteen hundred boys.’ This explains how Salva doesn’t panic and think irrationally about situations like the Itang refugee camp closing, and when he decides to walk to Kenya, he follows through and helps three-fourths of the group arrive in Kenya safely. In this story Salva was hard working to survive he may not have want to do it but he had to so he could survive. “Salva had never been so hungry. He stumbled along, somehow moving one foot ahead of the other.
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side,and they never would be again,but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.
Hardships may not seem influential or beneficial, but that is exactly what they are. Although they’re not what you want to happen, they transform you into a better person. Hardships influence people’s lives by making the journey difficult and the rewards more desirable. Do you know what it takes to survive? In A Long Walk to water, Salva[how he had to survive]. Salva had to be very brave t do what he did and very strong to do it. There were many factors that helped Salva survive such as persistence, leadership, and strength.
When the war started affecting Salva and his village it became apparent to him that he may never see his family again. “If I die now, I will never see my family again.” (11) This thought helped Salva strengthen and have the instinct to survive so he could see his family again, which is one of the reasons he did survive. Not only did he think he would never see his family again, but he became friends with Marial, a boy from the group he was in, who was soon taken away from him as well.
In the book A Long Walk to Water, the main character Salva must overcome a lot of challenges in order for his survival. He is persistent, a hard worker, and just overall a very lucky young boy. These factors are very big reasons for his survival. After reading the book, readers can see that one of the main factors for Salvas survival is hard work.
“Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope.” (Page 117) -Salva Dut In Sudan the water is the hardest thing to get, imagine you going to walk 5 miles to get a 45lb water jug then put on your head and walk another 5 mile all the way back home but the water in jug is full of insects and bacteria that can make you sick or even death after while the natural water will dry up so you and your family have to move with it and you walk again for miles they hope to find water and they won’t get killed by humans or animals. Salva is changing this cycle of moving with the water by raising money for them but he could not have done it if he was not a water follower himself and his story shows how he has become a leader.
Salva is a refugee from southern Sudan that, after many hardships and trials, makes it to the US and works hard to make a change and to help those like him. He did this by not only leading more than 150,000 lost boys to Kenya but also breaking the chain of hate between Nuer and Dinka by helping the opposing tribe post-war conditions. This essay will show the obstacles that people face while facing adversity, the factors to overcome adversity, and the greatest factor to overcome adversity. Firstly, there are many obstacles that people face while facing adversity. It could be physical like a broken arm or mental like the mental pain after the loss of a loved one. In the book, “Letters From Rifka”, Rifka faces many obstacles. She got ringworm, which prevented her from going to America.
To sum up, Salva did make it through the stressful journey, Salva has been back and forth visiting his biological family and his forster family that lives in New York.. This journey lead him to the person he is today by inspiring people to not give up on a dream or idea they had. After the obstacles he has overcame Walt Disney once said “All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” Everyone has a time in there life where they need to get passed something that is in there way. When this time or times come everyone would find a way to get through it, whether it is asking for help or doing it on their own. When someone says the word adversity one would say you have to be hard working, determined, and strong would pop into their mind.
I believe obstacles are one of the hardest things to accept as a human being. It can initially feel like a detour to an unknown road with many questions and anxieties about how we will overcome such adversities and how the success behind those battles create a base of foundation for each and every one of us. One of my most challenging times was when I transferred from a private school to a public school setting and having to adjust to the class size. Most of my classes had about one hundred to eight hundred students. Trying to find myself and adjust to all these new changes, I also went through a personal challenge and my GPA was greatly affected by it.
