Lost Boys of Neverland A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park tells us about a small boy named Salva who survived the second Sudanese war and made a big change in the world he lived in. Not only did he help people, but the people he helped were people he had a long history of violence with. Salva is a refugee from southern Sudan that, after many hardships and trials, makes it to the US and works hard to make a change and to help those like him. He did this by not only leading more than 150,000 lost boys to Kenya but also breaking the chain of hate between Nuer and Dinka by helping the opposing tribe post-war conditions. Later in the chapter we see Salva rush to learn English because he believes no other aid workers will take the time to teach him English. By Michael having empathy towards Salva and teaching him even a bit of English when Salva goes to the U.S later in the story, this helps him greatly. This event caused a domino effect as Salva was now able to communicate and form connections with those around him. Even with the connections being made and things being put into play, none of these would be possible without the resources to even survive. When people think of survival, they think of things like water, food and even weapons at times. Along with this comes the question “if you had to survive on an island what would you bring?” or some variation of it. After Salva and the other refugees cross the Nile and begin their walk into the desert, more and more people die of dehydration and starvation.
