The book The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives enhanced my understanding by reading on Abramsky explore poverty in the United States over a fifty year period. His detailed perspective on how poverty, social attitudes, and public policy have changed over the years. It was also helpful that Abramsky studied all over the United States and didn’t only research a few states. He looked at inner cities to rural areas, as well as, families suffering from intergenerational poverty. All in all, this is a good read if you are concerned about the current state of our
Poverty in America Poverty in the United States is a serious problem including all races. Black people have a higher poverty percentage than other races. The book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore himself explains his teenage life growing up in poverty and all the struggles he had to face as a black kid. Statistics show that the poverty rates for blacks according to 2015 is up to 24% and that number keeps increasing into 2016 (Jones 1). Most people say that it's black people's own fault that they have high poverty rates, and there is more in depth explanation for why black people have a very high percent of poverty compared to other races.
The poverty rate in this area is about 24.3%. The poverty rate of the United States as a whole lies around 12.7% (Current Poverty Rate). Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the country, and that is reflected through these statistics. One reason for the high poverty in the rural south may be heirs’ property. This is when the owner of property dies without a will, which makes it harder to lay claim to it or pass down inheritance (Davidson, Charles).
For several decades, Poverty has been an issue that has affected millions of people across the country. Regardless of past attempts to solve it, local government still has not been able to fully eradicate poverty. In Dallas this is no exception, even though the city has made huge strides to lower poverty levels the problem will always remain an issue as long as the city’s education system remains the same. I believe jobs in Texas grow faster than oranges do in California, but for many big cities, work alone is not enough to lift people out of poverty. This goes to show that the issue is not only unemployment, it’s underemployment.
Poverty leads to starvation. Starvation leads to suffering. Alabama currently has a poverty level of 19.2 percent, and if taxes are cut on employee’s paychecks, than this will go down to less than 5 percent. Currently, the tax employees have to pay on their paychecks is about thirty percent. If this rate is lowered, the employees will be able to keep more money for themselves.
Mississippi maybe one of the poorest states, but they love others and they show their love through sharing food. The spend their time and money the best they can to fit what they have although more often than not it is in an unhealthy way. They are limited to what activities they can participate in due to climate factors, location factors, and money. Lastly, it is partially due to lack of education.

Education in poverty-stricken areas is a luxury that many people do not receive and has always been a fight from the beginning of Mississippi’s historical roots. The battle for adequate education began over the issue of segregation and continues to hinder teens’ ability to learn. One of the reasons that education is unsatisfactory in many parts of Mississippi is because education and poverty are interrelated. Poverty has a negative impact on the student’s achievements and academic success and puts them at disadvantages for their futures. Although Mississippi is notorious for its major issues, the correlation of poverty and education have persisted as some of the most pressing issues that require immediate attention.
Poverty can be a vicious cycle for some families that goes from generation to generation. Another personal issue that can lead to poverty is illness and unemployment which puts someone out of work and there is little to no income coming in. Along with these personal issues that I stated there are also many
Poverty is universal but does vary within countries, even neighborhoods. According to society poverty is hunger, lack of shelter, not having the ability to see a doctor when necessary and limited education. In third world countries, it is very common for parents to conceive a high number of children as a source of labor. Not only do these kids frequently receive slight or no education, but large families in these countries are the main contributor to global overpopulation. These children are not privileged with the same basic opportunities given to an American child.
The children of our nation are the future; however, America’s children are suffering. Child poverty, hunger and nutrition, and welfare are growing issues that need to be solved. The statistics provided in The State of America’s Children 2017 Report are eye-opening. Sadly, poverty is threatening America’s children. According to the State of America’s Children in the United States and Alabama 2017 Factsheets, 18 percent of the U.S.’s children were poor in 2016, and 25 percent of Alabama’s children were poor in 2016.
