Jazz has shaped the world we know today. Jazz would have never been as popular without the help of the famous musicians: Jelly Roll Morton, Joe King Oliver, Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. These people helped spread the new genre through radio, railroads, and the records that they played. Where did this all start? The jazz age began in New Orleans where a certain King was born.
In the Early 1920s African Americans began to feel the need to express themselves and thus new art, poetry and music was created. During this, one new music type exploded in popularity throughout the 1920s and began its evolution into the music now known as Jazz. Jazz became extremely popular in the 1920s do to the mixing of cultures in the instruments and the African American stories told through the lyrics that defined it. The music type known as jazz can be said to have first popped up in New Orleans but that is not necessarily true as the musical sounds actuated with jazz have been said to have came up at other places at different times but New Orleans is where jazz first got really popular.

Jazz was born in New Orleans about 100 years ago (early 20th century), but its roots can be found in the musical traditions of both Africa and Europe. In fact, some people say that jazz is a union of African and European music. Most legends are known for excelling in a specific field or for doing something so impactful on the world that they will be remembered for ages. These African American musicians also influenced many of the white musicians as well. White jazz musicians had taken inspiration from black jazz music for many years, but because of swing, they became even more deeply devoted to integrating this music to blacks and whites. Benny Goodman was one of these white musicians.
Despite Jazz being formed out of two cultures, the issues of social stratification and racial identity never had to be addressed in early jazz history. But as Jazz grew in popularity in a prewar 1930s America, the issue of racism started to form. As Jazz prospered within the economy and as a musical style, it’s roots revealed it’s racial identity. Jazz emerged from the music used formerly to entertain slaves and was a tool of rebellion against the white man, Jazz’z roots were very much embedded in slave culture. As free slaves moved north, they brought their Jazz influence to parts of the country such as Chicago and New York.
The radio itself contributed to the culture and education of America, because now sports were stimulated and politicians had a new audience to speak to as larger crows finally heard their promises and pleas. A large significance to the culture of America during the 20’s came from African Americans. The new music genre of Jazz, which rooted from African Americans in New Orleans during the migrating of blacks, became popular among flappers and the rebelling society. Handy, “Jelly Roll” Morton and Joseph “Joe” King Oliver are commonly associated with the birth of jazz. The surge of Jazz came from the new racial pride within African Africans, blossoming from black communities in the North.
