Two coming of age components that can drastically change somebody's life are experiencing loss and experiencing love. Love and loss can seem incredibly different, however they both have the power to change somebody's life completely. Coming of age is the growth and maturity of a person that can be shaped by an event in their life. In the book The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the main character Lily experiences loss because of her mother dying. When comparing Lily from when she first found out about her mom to later in the book, her growth is clearly demonstrated. This quote shows that she has forgiven herself and her mom, but she is not quite over her sadness and still struggles with it. Lily experiencing and going through what happened to her mom helped her come to terms with herself and was able to find forgiveness in her heart. She grew and matured from when she first figured out what happened to her mom. Love is a feeling that can change you completely for better or for worse. It shapes your perspectives of other people and even your perspectives of yourself. In the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by Shakespeare, Juliet starts off as an obedient daughter and is naive. However, when she experiences love and marries Romeo, she changes and becomes more defiant and disobeys her parents. When Juliet first meets Romeo and falls in love, or the balcony scene where they become more connected. He breaks her out of the shell and they become closer and even more in love. We can see the moment Juliet shows her new personality and is able to stand up to her parents about marrying
