My diner has been affected negatively by the Shut down of the NASA shuttle program. My family opened the Space coast diner in 1969. We chose to open the restaurant on the space coast because it was a huge tourist attraction and there wasn’t many places to get food. We were successful for a long time. We served breakfast, lunch, and dinner which made us the number one choice for tourists. We boomed in the 1970s when many tourists visited the space coast because we had recently landed on the moon in 1969. We also benefited from people wanting to visit the Kennedy space center, which we are only 3 miles away from. The reason we have had success for 40 years is because of our location if we didn’t have the space shuttle program our restaurant would …show more content…

The fact that we were one of the only diners near the Kennedy space center meant tourists who wanted to visit the Kennedy space center and bring their kids were buying our food for so may years. Now people don’t visit the space center because there are no missions to space, which is the big event that attracts all of the tourists. According to Nasa.gov they shut down the space shuttle program in 2011 which happened to be the year when our diners business dropped 50%. It also affected my life because my brother worked as a shuttle engineer for the Kennedy space center and lost his job when they shut down the shuttle program. My brother had helped my restaurant for many years by telling his coworkers about how amazing the food and service was, but since he lost his job I lost customers. Many of the people who live here who also own small businesses have been affected as much as me. All of the businesses who have made a living leaning on the tourist attraction of the shuttle program have gone under or are making not enough money to support their families which is a shame. The retirement of the program has also affected me because the People who lived here because they loved the space shuttle program have left the area which has lost me many people who have ate at my diner for a long time. Not only has it affected my life it has also affected many of my workers. I was forced to lay off half the staff to keep the business going. These people all were making a living working at my diner but now have to find work in a place where there isn’t enough jobs already. Also many of my workers have had their pay lowered because with the lost revenue I had to lower all of my workers pay to 8.05 per hour which is the minimum wage in Florida according to dol.gov. With me having to fire half of my workers my diner now has a bad reputation for having slow service along with my workers slacking off because of their lowered salaries. My diner also benefited from all of the shuttle launch day specials. Every time the a shuttle was going to launch, that day I would have extremely low prices that would fill the diner up and people who liked my food would come back because now they knew how good my food is. Now that people cant be introduced from the shuttle day specials I
