The Interview (round 2)
This week’s assignment is to follow up with last week’s interviewee and have an in depth Question and Answer session. I felt that it was advantageous to interview my childhood best friend Jeffrey James Landers who is following in his parents’ footsteps in the family restaurant, bar and marina business. Interviewing Jeff was quiet fascinating because it was very insightful to see the challenges that he faces with his businesses on a daily business. On the outside looking in, it appears that he is sitting on a cash cow; however, if he does not take care and plan ahead for his business, they could potentially fail. When interviewed J. Is there a time that one of your establishments took a blow in customers?
Jeff: “Yes, we had a shooting at one of our bars and it was all over the news. Business in that location has been either in decline or brought in bad clients.”
14. If there anything that could disrupt any of your businesses?
Jeff: “If we were to go into a recession that would put our businesses in a bad spot.” “Also, if we were to get sued for any reasons that would disrupt our business.”
15. How important is planning for the future?
Jeff: “Just like any business, we are always planning on making things better and ensuring that we are providing our customers the best service.
Lessons Learned Based on my interview with Jeff, I realized that there was way more to the restaurant business than what meets the eye. There are several factors/issues that this business has faced in the past and future. The viability of his companies lie on planning, management and service provided to his loyal customer base. Furthermore, I better understand what it takes to own and operate a restaurant and have better insight to what issues that they have to deal with regarding everything from staffing issues, managing people and maintaining inventory for day-to-day
