Eventually, Ellen and I did not want to remain working as busgirls at the Stanford Barn. Raised to set higher goals for ourselves, we both searched for better jobs. In 1966, Ellen was hired as an Administrative Assistant by the Board of Education and eventually I found employment as a Sales Clerk at Macy’s Department Store. Our new part-time jobs provided us the opportunity to meet interesting people and develop new friendships. For a brief period, Henry; a co-worker in the office where Ellen worked, became a significant person in her life and a Supervisor named Lee became a life-long friend. When we finally landed, we were eager to collect our luggage and pass through the document control process, where we spotted our Welcoming Committee, anxiously waiting for us behind the glass barrier at the Arrival Terminal. Coty, husband Dick and Coty's two younger brothers, Bert and Sam, waived enthusiastically, as we waved back, almost running towards the exit door. On July 20, 1969, along with the rest of the world, Dick was mesmerized as he watched Apollo 11 land on the moon. Larry and Jessie, entered the living room just as Neil Armstrong announced that, “The Eagle has landed.” With more than half a billion people tuned in around the world, we stood behind Dick and looked over his shoulder, watching Neil climb down the ladder to proclaim, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” As “Buzz”Aldrin joined him on the lunar surface, we observed for two and a half hours, speechless, while they collected samples of rocks and dust and took photographs before leaving behind an American flag and a plaque with the words: Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon.
