On the 24th of July, 1969 the whole world paused to watch the live broadcast of the first men to step onto the moon and claim territory with the U.S flag - a victory in the century long space race. Yet there a small minority avidly protest against this official statement, claiming that this should not be a cause of celebration but instead, suspicion. In this essay I shall prove how believers ignore clear facts and logic that prove that there is no conspiracy.
The theory relies on the fact that the United States would not be able to reach the moon and are desperate enough to fake it. There is clear motivation with the severity of their desperation and pressure on the government. Kubrick’s two particular films were the cause for aroused suspicion in the conspiracy theorists community, “2001: the Space Odyssey” (which was released a year before the moon landing) and “The Shining”. The former was evidence that the technology to fake such footage was possible by use of impressive visual manipulation and the latter was claimed to be riddled with hints. These subtle clues of an apollo jumper of one of the main character 's attire; the original 217 number changed to 237 which was reasoned by hoaxists as 237,000 being the average distance to the moon; and the repeated quote “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” being used to work in an Apollo 11 acronym (A11). In any reasonably logical person, these would not be acceptable evidence for a theory yet these ludicrous ideas have been employed by conspiracy theorists.
