Modes of Writing There are many tales and stories that very few readers know about. The fairytale Hurleburlebutz by the Brothers Grimm is just one example of this. In this tale, a king gets lost in the forest and a white dwarf comes and promises to show the king the way out only if he would give the dwarf his youngest daughter. The fearful king agrees and the dwarf shows him the way out, and tells the king that he will come to get his bride in a week. The princess and her sisters try unsuccessfully to trick the dwarf out of the wedding twice, and he warns the king that unless he got the princess the next week, bad things would happen. With their failure to trick the dwarf, the princess is forced to leave her home and family the next week. After the princess and the dwarf had been married for some years, the dwarf said that he had to leave on a trip and gave the princess strict instructions about a pigeon that she has to catch and behead. While the dwarf is gone, the princess does as instructed and as soon as the pigeon’s head is cut off, a handsome prince appears and tells her that he was a prince that had a curse put on him by a fairy, and that he was the dwarf. The two go back to the princess’s kingdom happily and when the king dies, they inherit the kingdom. Every fairytale has a moral or value that is incorporated into it. The value that we as older and more mature readers perceive in this tale is that if we are honest and keep our promises, good things will happen to us, but if we try to lie and trick we will never receive
