When Lindo Jong says that the “strongest wind cannot be seen”(89), she is alluding to more than just the physical wind. This saying makes a statement about Lindo Jong’s mindset and what she thinks of others. It also is a clue that provides evidence regarding the relationship between Lindo Jong, and her daughter Waverly.

The statement that the “strongest wind cannot be seen”(89) is actually saying that the strongest, most powerful people aren’t always seen. That the true leaders, the ones with the best ideas, the most intimidating, a lot of times stay back and become quiet as well as reserved. The true meaning of this saying shows the reader how Lindo Jong thinks. She has a very traditional Chinese mindset, and holds tight to those traditions and values. The reader notices the intensity of this relationship when Waverly believes that her mother showing off her winnings ‘ “it’s just so obvious. It’s just so embarrassing.” ’(99) Her mother takes this as that she is embarrassed to be her daughter and then embodies the mindset that ‘ “We are not concerning this girl. This girl not have concerning for us.” ’(100) At the end of the story Waverly also see’s her relationship with her mother as a chess game. Personally, like many teenage girls, I have gone through similar experiences when I believe that my parents are too obnoxious, or just too much sometimes. I also, like many others, have felt like my parents are too strict, or too traditional, when I later learned that they were just doing the best for me. My mother has actually told me before that “The best leaders have to step back and be quiet sometimes”, which I believe is very similar to Lindo Jong telling Waverly that the “strongest wind cannot be
