Perception of aging and BSN core competencies discussion My perception of aging and senility were different when compared with the facts on aging pre-assessment quiz. The prevalence of individuals that have symptoms of dementia is much higher than I believed. Another misconception I had was believing elderly people were happier than younger individuals. Honestly, the thought of retiring, experiencing the freedom to spend time with loved ones, and enjoying hobbies would lead me to think elders would be happier than younger people.
In Chief Tecumseh’s Address to General William Henry Harrison, and Chief Seattle’s Letter to President Pierce, both chiefs attempt to persuade white men in positions of power to leave their tribes alone by explaining their tribes love over the land. In contrast, Chief Tecumseh utilizes allusion to anger his audience into uniting together to stop the white man, while Chief Seattle conveys imagery throughout his speech, stating that the white man will taint the Earth as a result of his greed.
Chapter 13 was all about the elderly and their place in society. Gerontology is the study of elderly people and the hardships people are faced with once they start aging. More specifically Social gerontology is a subclass of Gerontology that specializes in in what changes a person makes in society once they start aging into the later years. Industrialization is believed to be one of the causes of elderly people losing superiority and power in society. What once was wisdom and knowledge that defined an elderly person is now something like old fashioned.
Chapter 12, Development and Aging, shows the development of learning and memory abilities across the lifespan, starting with infants. A human can start to learn in a mother’s stomach before birth. The human uterus is surprisingly a noisy place taking in all the sounds that they hear such as maternal talk, outside noises and heartbeats from the mother. Something that I did not know is, around 25 weeks of gestational age, a fetus’s brain and sense organs are sufficiently developed for the fetus to start perceiving and learning about the sounds they hear. I think that is interesting that a baby can pick up sounds from the outside.
In the article Leisure Education for a Quality Transition to Adulthood (1997), Stuart J. Schleien and M. Tipton Ray examine and evaluate the need and support for implementing comprehensive therapeutic recreation services within an educational school setting. Schleien & Tipton Ray (1997) effectively explains the needs of implementing these services in order to help students learn skills, which may be used in both vocational and non-vocational environments, thus facilitating a quality transition into adulthood. Throughout the article, Schleien & Tipton Ray (1997) explains that there is a constant need for increasing recognition and acceptance for not only youth themselves but also youth with disabilities. That being said, a successful transition
When thinking about life expectancy many people including myself think about the commonly associated factors like exercising, being smoke-free and such. However, knowing some of the contributing factors of longevity and practicing them are two different things. While I may know what is beneficial for my well-being and how it may increase chances of longevity, it does not ensure that I will live my life accordingly. In fact whenever I do consciously think about living a better lifestyle most of the time I am thinking presently and never consider how beneficial it would be later in life. In the video Aging to 90+ Years they mention some of the lifestyle factors that are associated with either long or short life.
The result shows that 46 or 92% of the elderlies wished that they had more respect to themselves. Forty or 80% of them said that they sometimes pity themselves while 34 or 68% of them perceived that they have little or sometimes nothing to help their family and friends. In addition, 33 or 66% of elderlies said that they are not happy with their accomplishments in life while 32 or 64% of them perceived that they do not have capabilities and good qualities that they can be proud of and shared that they find it difficult to accept the changes happening in themselves at the present moment. Moreover, 28 or 56% of the elderlies shared that they often think and wish that they are in other people’s condition while half of them (50%) think and feel that they are useless. Further, despite of the adversities experienced in later life, 32 or 64% of elderlies didn’t think that they
Aging is something that everyone takes granted for. We don’t notice it happening but it is happening day by day. The video really gives an insight to what the elderly believe the meaning of aging is and its interesting to the differences in their answers. The way they respond also tells us how they lived their lives and their personality in a way. Aging in American to me means that we are learning something new about ourselves and the world, by living one moment at a time.
What do you think has increased the longevity of this age category? I believe what increased the longevity of the aged category are all of the different physicians and Nurses that specialize in the health and wellbeing of our senior population. Also, different resources and actives such as job place programs that are offered to keep this population active and in the community. Some cases we have seniors that are home bounded and need a different type of assisting there are programs that cater to their
The lifespan development of a toddler entails the various stages of change a toddler would go through as they grow. All Americans should have a concern with living well in our old age and living a long purposeful life. Due to the myths, falsifications, and the vagueness about what life will be like for the aging, elderly, middle-aged and younger generations of Americans, we are distressingly unprepared to tackle the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that stand before us. As a country we should have a common goal to recognize the modifications that need to be made in numerous parts of the American lifestyle that will facilitate us to deal with the trials and improve the opportunities presented by the maturing of our society. What will be one’s quality of life as they advance through life? Aging may bring despair through diseases, vitality by healthy choices, and meaning through a transcendent self.
For my Life-Span interview project, I decided to interview someone who was in the late adulthood period of their life. The interview was conducted in the interviewee 's home, on November 12th, 2015. The woman I choose to interview was known to me, and she is currently 76 years of age, a grandmother with four children and seven grandchildren. We sat down and chatted for about an hour and a half. I started the interview by making small talk and then moved into the interview questions.
For my interview, the aging individual is a person I have known my whole life. Though she is not blood related, she is considered family, and an important person in my life. I chose her because I have seen her go through the aging process in a positive, and inspirational way. She has defied the norm that a woman needs a man in her life, yet she has lived her life without being in a single relationship. I have structured this interview to make it more like she is telling me her story.
Late Adulthood is the stage of the human life cycle where an individual nears the end of their life. The life expectancy in the United States has slowly increased over the years therefore allowed many to further analyze the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development during late adulthood. The stage of late adulthood has been emphasized by ageism and the stereotypical "old" person but, will be further educated by the normative development of the life cycle of late adulthood. For the “old” experience dramatic changes in their development as they face loss, death, and illness.
Ageing is multidimensional change involving the physical, social as well as psychological aspects for an individual. Old age is generally an irreversible process, chronological, and a universal phenomenon and a challenge to everyone, who reaches it irrespective of sex, economic background, social background, race, ethnicity, profession, occupation, religion, skill or learning. Age can be also described as a progressive decline of the physical and mental function resulting in a simultaneous decline in both the capacity of body to maintain physiological balance as well as adaptability of the individuals to various stresses there by consequently increasing the chances of illness and mortality ( Marpady &et al, 2012) Neetu (2013) put aging by citing Becker (1959) as a complex process which includes anatomical, physiological, psychological and even social and economic changes. Randhawa (1987) stated aging by citing Becker (1959) in that ageing consists of two simultaneous components anabolic building up and catabolic breaking down. In the middle years there is an essential balance between expansion and decay, while growth predominates in youth; degenerative changes which start occurring very clearly in life pre-dominate in the late life span.
