The famous author Ernest Hemingway once said, “Every man’s life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and died that distinguish one man from another.” Ernest Hemingway believed that the way people live their lives shows a lot about their personality, and he showed it in his novels. In his novel The Sun Also Rises he said that actually only three of the main characters are lost, and three of the other main characters are beat up. It only depends on how a person depicts them. The characters that represent a lost generation are Brett, Cohn, and Mike. They each represent the lost generation in many ways. Brett is an example of the lost generation because she is amoral. “I’ve got to do something. I’ve got to do something I really want to do. I’ve lost my self-respect”(187). Jake mostly represents being beat up because he has been through so much, and he is very depressed. “You’re an expatriate. You’ve lost touch with the soil. You get precious. Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed by sex. You spend all your time talking, not working. You are an expatriate, see? You hang around cafes” (120). This quote is said by Bill in the novel and he is talking about Jake. Everything he says is true, and it perfectly represents how Jake is one of the characters that is beat up. Jake’s main problem is his impotence, and the fact that he is in love with Brett. Bill was in the war, and now he is a successful author. One main way he can be described as beat up is that his stories are the war. They are filled with fear, but covered up with humour.
