The theme of racism in the novel relates to the figures of the Arabs. Arabs are the secondary race, and it may seem like they are insignificant characters in the novel. However, the plot develops around them. The choice of their nationality is not accidental. The problem of racism and the French peoples preconceived attitude towards the Arabs was the reality in Algeria at the beginning of the 20th century. In society, race clearly affects one’s beliefs, actions, and decisions. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience for progression. The social construct of race in the united states to the people is based on privileges and availability of resources, which includes schools, government help, shelter, and social equality. Looking at society and the way race came along to develop here in the United States has been a long journey for people of color, speaking in a historical context, whites have always held some sort of belief of a “white privilege.” …show more content…

Therefore, race is often referred to as a social construct. The differences in skin color and facial appearances have led most of the world to classify humans into groups instead of individual humans. These constructs affect us all, this includes even white people, and they often result in situations where majority racial groups cause unjust treatment, and cruel judgment to those people who would be classified as a minority, which for the most part is people of color. The understanding of race as a social construct is best shown by the judgment of racial issues within our own culture, specifically those that have been most affected by this social construct of race.
