The title of this book is Joy Luck Club written by the author Amy Tan. Amy Tan wrote this fiction novel in order to better understand her mother due to a strained relationship. Interestingly, this book was also written to show that people's past experiences in life can have a heavy impact on a person's, culture, opinions, and relationships. In this novel, Lindo is one of four mothers with a fascinating past. Lindo was involved in a very toxic marriage which she escaped due to her learning some very important skills along the way. These skills would eventually help her escape her physical prison of being involved in the unpleasant marriage, and the mental prison of finally escaping her mother's promises, finally beginning her life. While Lindo's experience could've been traumatizing, she decided to make the most of it and learn a valuable life skill in the process. Through her incredibly tough adventure, she learned the valuable skill of invisible strength. To escape her marriage, she decided to come up with a mastermind plan. With a hasty urge to escape her marriage, she thoroughly analyzed everyone around her in order to come up with a plan. In the novel Lindo recalls her extensive planning, “I thought about my plan for many days. I observed everyone around me, the thoughts they showed in their faces, and then I was ready” (Tan 31 ). Before Lindo was married she made a promise to be an obedient wife. But in this marriage, Lindo had a multitude of reasons to lose her temper. Tyan-yu's family was incredibly strict and had many policies for Lindo. Instead of freaking out, Lindo decided to be tranquil like a pond despite the terrible conditions, remembering the promise she made to her mother. In "Joy Luck Club", Lindo recalls conversation with her egregious mother-in-law. '"If you refuse to sleep with my son, I refuse to feed you or clothe you." So that's how I knew what my husband had said to avoid his mother's anger. I was also boiling with anger, but I said nothing, remembering my promise to my parents to be an obedient wife"' (Tan). Wanting children, Lindo's mother-in-law pressed Lindo to have kids with her son. Interestingly, Tyan-yu didn't want kids but still threw Lindo under the bus. Once again, Lindo surprisingly keeps her calm composure, due to the promise she gave to her parents to be an obedient wife.
