The Veldt Literary Analysis

Jackson once said, “Technology has made life so convenient for us that it’s almost scary to think of what would happen if we had to go without our favorite gadget for an extended period of time”. Technology is something that is seen every day but there is a limit, as shown in Ray Bradbury’s short story “The Veldt” when something goes wrong. The children Wendy and Peter are being raised in a technologically driven house which the parents think is helping them, but is actually causing more issues. The constant exposure to technology causes the children to be violent, lazy, and lack empathy. First, technology causes the children the short story “The Veldt” to be violent. Father says, we’re considering it. Then Peter says "I don't think you'd better consider it any more, Father." Father then says "I won't have any threats from my son!" This is an act of violence because Peter is threatening to do something to his father for no valid reason. Peter also says,” "I wish you were dead!" This is an act of violence because he has become so obsessed with technology that he is willing to have his father

One example is when, Peter says,” "I thought we were free to play as we wished.” Then father says, "You are, within reasonable bounds.” Peter then exclaims "…I wouldn't want the nursery locked up," He is lacking empathy because is not understanding why his father is locking up the nursery. Peter says, "Oh, I hate you!" He is lacking empathy because he is not understanding his father is turning of the nursery for his own good and trying to help him, but instead he is crying and yelling insults. The children said, "We're full of strawberry ice cream and hot dogs," This is lacking empathy because they are thinking about how their parents would feel if they ate at then did not eat at home. Wendy and Peter have been spoiled so much that they do not think about reasoning and other people’s
