A Comparison of the Novel and the Film the Virgin Suicides The virgin Suicides is a beautiful but sad novel of Jeffrey Eugenides, telling of a band of neighborhood boys who piece together the story of a tragedy of a middle-class family in Michigan in the 1970s begun by the youngest daughter’s spectacular suicide, followed by the suicides of the other four sisters within 13 months The novel has been adapted for a major motion picture by director Sofia Coppola and was published in 1999. The film has gained a lot of reputation and raised public concerns over adolescents’ mental problems. The film version of this story is a successful adaptation on the whole. It is faithful to the original and retains most of the plots. The actors as well as actresses are not only in accordance with the appearances of the original story, but they also reflect the characters’ quality and disposition. Despite the differences between the novel and the film, this story is meaningful with educational value and worth thinking deeply. The Lisbon sisters are just like the flower buds in their early puberty. They cannot hear the voices out of their door. They are always alone, not just today. They finally enter into another world unknown to everyone. We are not sure whether they can hear the outside voices this time. But it doesn’t matter, because the loneliness cannot be copied and will not disappear through hugs. We feel lonely in the same way as the Lisbons do.
