Growing up through middle school years, I had conformed to settling for whatever grades I got and not really working hard. When the transition was made to high school, I truly learned how much work would have to been put in for to make average grades, much less above average ones. At the beginning,
I started paying more attention in class, studying for test, and making sure to finish all my homework as soon as I can and not leaving it for last minute. My friend
Symoi Halsoll I overcame many obstacles to become this person I am today. I never knew each year things would get challenging for me that would change my life forever. My family was from Kingston, Jamaica so I really didn’t understand that much of the United States because they were somewhat learning about the country too. When attending school, I never use to fit in with the other kids; I would only have one or two friends.
I graduated back in 2013 from a pretty decent school district. During high school I wasn’t an A student or a B student, I just did what I needed in order to pass. Once I got to my junior of high school I started taking things more seriously, I started making A’s and B’s. Once my senior year started the pressure was on. Everyone asking “what college are you thinking about attending?”
In middle school I never had good grades I was always the student who did not understand the lesson. During this time I would get so frustrated i would just give up and not even try. From the beginning of 6th grade to the end of 7th I pretty much had all F’s maybe some B’s in my easy classes. My parents were very disappointed in me and i was disappointed in myself. After 7th grade i decided i was gonna switch gears and start really putting my right foot forward and start paying attentions in school and ask for help when I need it.
As a student in high school, life was dramatic and challenging. I was not ready to face huge changes during my freshmen year, and I often thought life was as easy as breezing through a straight tunnel. Then, I started seeing many gifted and talented students struggle and fall behind in high school, and I feared that I would be the next victim in line. Gradually, I learned step by step to grow and adjust to the changing environment, like a metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. I became more determined to earn success in academics and athletics; most importantly, I found out who I am: a small girl with a big heart to change the world.
Throughout life you may hear something along the side of you changed. Most would think what does that mean? According to Merriam Webster’s Dictionary it means “to make different in some particular”(Webster’s Dictionary). It can leads us to flourish in life, to evolve from who we once were. It is inevitable so why not make it positive?
High school prepared me by being able to attend dual enrollment, which was one of the great thing my school had to offer to help advanced student academically. It helped me tremendously being able to associate myself with college level students and see things from their point of view. I also took an online class that was blackboard. By the time I entered middle school, I had greatly improved my English speaking, reading, and writing. I learned to embrace my accent, and take pride in my Hispanic heritage. I still can't believe how much I have grown as a person in the last 9 years. The struggles that I endured growing up, strengthened and prepared me for the future challenges I am yet to face. I will be a first-generation college student next fall, and I know that I will be successful because I have always been able to overcome the obstacles I face.
Throughout my life school always came easy to me. Once high school started that changed quickly. I never once studied for anything and here I am junior year doing homework and studying for at least 4 hours a day. It has paid off though because I've maintained all A's and B's with a weighted GPA of 95.9. It was a hard change and took a while to adapt to go from easy middle school classes to college courses freshman year.
“This is a new year, a new beginning and things will change,” (Taylor swift). 6th grade has had a bunch of positive and negative impacts of my life. When I entered sixth grade it has changed me a lot from being more responsible to harder school classes and to having more freedom. Since I have been in sixth grade I have gained more responsibilities to handle.
High school has impacted my life in so many ways. High School taught me so many things, from personal relationships to creating a relationship with my education. As a freshman, I made a huge amount of mistakes and I regret doing foolish things, but I’ve realized, I was only maturing into the young adult I am today. Freshman year, I was out of focus and I was only trying to find myself. I would also prioritize other things and ignore my parent’s advice, where they would tell me to focus in school and give it my full attention.
It’s finally the new year, but it’s also unfortunately the time to return to school once again for the final semester. Thankfully, this does mean a fresh start for everyone’s grades, however, for many, it doesn 't take long to bring them all down in each class to C’s. At the beginning of my high school career, I knew grades were important but, I never knew how vital until the end of my eleventh-grade year when I began "college hunting. " I realized that with a low GPA nobody wants you at their university because you 're a representation of them so, when you look bad they look bad. Soon after, knowing what had to be done, I prepared myself for the final year of high school with new study habits, motivation, and a new mindset on the grades I 'll accept because I was "Passing." In my past years, I see how I didn 't take my education seriously.
The past four years of my life hold both my highest of highs and my lowest of lows. High school can be a very awkward time period in a person’s life. Four years ago, I made the intimidating switch from St. Mary’s School to Algoma High School. There were certain aspects of high school which made me nervous, but academics was not one of them. I learned how to be a responsible student in my earlier years, and school had always come relatively easy to me.
