According to Hall, discursive formation that accompanied colonialism was “the West/the Rest” (89). It emerged from asserting a new sense of identity to unify internal relations in Europe, such as Christianity, and it legitimated colonialism by imprinting the Western (European) “culture and customs on the new worlds” (Hall 197, 195). The new identities distinguished the West from the Rest while producing certain knowledge of the Rest: “an Earthly Paradise” “the simple, innocent life”, and “the lack of developed social organization and civil society”, and “people living in a pure state of Nature” (204, 209).
