“It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change,” said Charles Darwin, English biologist. In his book, The World Is Flat, by Thomas Friedman he explains globalization and how it’s making our world flat. Globalization simply means that the world has become flat and anything can be outsourced or automated, including individuals. Friedman informs readers, in order for individuals to survive in a flat world, they will have to become “untouchables.” Untouchables according to Friedman, “are people whose jobs cannot be outsources, digitized, or automated” (280). Medical schools including Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, are already creating …show more content…

In an increasingly flat world, PNWU should interest those who want to go into the medical field. Beyond this audience, my point should speak to anyone in Yakima who wants an untouchable job. Although PNWU is a great medical school, people may argue that it doesn't have the best reputation. PNWU will benefit the Yakima Valley greatly by educating students to become great collaborators with other doctors or hospitals, great explainers to their patients, and great adapters. Not everyone thinks that PNWU has the best reputation. People may argue that the reputation is not as credible as other schools who have only positive criteria. PNWU has gotten such a bad reputation because of the things they’ve done. In 2013, a deaf student applied and got accepted to PNWU, but was later unfortunately denied. In his article, “Deaf Man Sues PNWU for Pulling His Acceptance,” by Ted Skroback, the only explanation given in the letter was, “The presence of qualified [interpreters] would threaten patients safety and disrupt the learning experience of other students” (quoted by …show more content…

Medical students need to be able to work as a team and be able to communicate. In his book, Friedman states, “you need people who can work well with others, and, even more importantly, you need team leaders who know how to speak to people, to explain, and inspire” (287). What Friedman is trying to say is that people in a flat world need to work together and be able to communicate to each other. This is becoming more important than ever before, since anything can easily be outsourced. Medical students or even doctors have to be able to work in a team, which is what students learn at PNWU. Students are taught to work with others and communicate to each other. PNWU students during their 3rd and 4th year have rotations which they have to collaborate with clinics and hospitals. Here they get more of a hands-on experience. In her article, “Collaborating with Your Healthcare Colleagues,” Lynda Lampert, explains the importance of collaboration. Lampert states, “Collaboration in healthcare is the best way to ensure that your patient receives the best possible care” (Ausmed). Lampert’s point is that collaboration is the key to ensure the best care for a patient. Doctors need to be able to collaborate with other doctors when they are unsure of what treatment to give or are unsure of what a patient might have. The Yakima Valley will benefit from medical students
