The antagonist in Catch-22 is the bureaucracy of the military. Yossarian, the protagonist, is constantly struggling against the bureaucracy and the people who represent it, like Colonel Cathcart. In the military the soldiers are slaves of the bureaucracy and everything they do is dictated by it. Yossarian’s only goal is to not be killed and to go home. The many catch-22 situations in the bureaucracy keep him from ever seeing an end to his life in the military. Yossarian is not a very likable man and this doesn't help him maneuver the many problems in the military bureaucracy. Adding to his problem many of the people he is a nuisance to work in the bureaucracy and are the ones who decide whether or not he can go home. This antagonistic influence
