The Downfall of Government Surveillance in the United States Imagine a society full of conformity and no privacy, like the society in George Orwell’s novel, 1984. The United States of America is quickly turning into that society more and more every day due to an immense amount of technological advances. The U.S. is one of the most governmentally surveilled countries in the world behind infamous China. Allen Abel’s article, “1984 is Here” uses technology experts to evaluate surveillance’s impact on people’s privacy. People have to live in constant fear of being recorded even in private. Abel explains that government surveillance has “‘invaded the sacred precincts of private and domestic life’” (Abel 4). People no longer feel the sense of privacy that they used to feel before the government installed millions of surveillance cameras all over the country. Similar to Abel, Leong found that government surveillance has limited people’s privacy because it tracks people based on their racial and religious groups and discriminates against them. American citizens feel like they have to hide themselves and their beliefs so they are not discriminated against. Both Abel and Leong describe the insecurity Americans are experiencing due to this increase in government surveillance. American citizens have to live with the constant knowledge that they can be watched through government surveillance cameras at any time. Questions are being raised by citizens regarding their safety and if the U.S. government is transforming into a communist government. The government’s attempts to find criminals through cameras cause a multitude of problems for innocent people due to the high percentage of misidentification that occurs.
