What importance does power have in today's society? In The War Between the Classes, by Gloria D. Miklowitz, there are various ways to learn from power that is exemplified through most of the book. The morals learned can be utilized in our everyday lives. One of the most prominent themes throughout the book was that of power, which may be used or abused, it is the ability to influence, and is always present in some form. As previously stated, there are many morals and themes throughout the book. The book has shown how power may be used or abused when suggests to a group of higher color, "'Let's sabotage the game,' I suggested to the whole group one day. Power can be used to influence others. This was shown when Gwen was influenced by Amy and others to help with the rally when she "...put the heavy bag on the ground and dug into it. Out came a big roll of cheap red ribbon. 'Your armbands.' She smiled triumphantly." (Miklowitz 149) Although Amy and the others have a lower status, they still have power in a way that influences people such as Gwen to want to do something they had never thought they would do. Another example of influence is when a police officer commands Adam, "'This is a no-parking area. May I see your license, please?' Adam didn't even reach for his wallet. 'I live here. I'm Adam Tarcher.' 'Oh, Mr.Tarcher, I wasn't sure!' The policeman's manner changed abruptly and he started to put his notebook away." (Miklowitz 69-70). Adam's "power" had influenced the officer to change his approach once he realized who he was talking to.
